Who are Lufthansa?

The national airline of Germany, Lufthansa operate a fleet of modern, well equipped planes based mainly around the Airbus fleet.

They’ve been about in one form or another since 1926 and are known for good, dare I say efficient service. Whilst they’re not an obvious choice of airline for those able to fly from London they make a good alternative for those flying from from regional airports for whom a transfer in Frankfurt is no more effort than Heathrow.

Where do Lufthansa fly to in Australia?

The major international destination airports for UK departures are Sydney, Perth and Melbourne.

How good are Lufthansa ?

Lufthansa hold dear the values of their nation and are a fine ambassador for everything good about Germany. The cabin staff are excellent and everything runs like clockwork. Food is of a good standard and the economy cabin is one of the most comfortable.

First Class travellers can look forward to being ferried to the plane from the first class lounge in Frankfurt by Porsche Cayenne or Mercedes s-Class.

Skytrax rate them as a Four Star Airline which places them in the top 20% of airlines in the world.

What else should I know about Lufthansa ?

The name Lufthansa is derived from Luft, the German for air, and Hansa after Hanseatic League, a powerful German medieval trading group.

They are part of the Star Alliance so people with BMI frequent flyer cards can earn, or spend air miles with Lufthansa.

Emirates Airlines are the eighth largest airline in the world in terms of international passengers carried, and fifth-largest in the world in terms of scheduled international passenger-kilometres flown, carrying over 20 million passengers a year.

Who are Emirates Airlines?

If you didn’t know any better you’d be forgiven for thinking that Emirates are a sports wear manufacturer as you see their sponsorship across the globe on some of the best sports people and teams.

But they’re actually the eighth largest airline in the world in terms of international passengers carried, and fifth-largest in the world in terms of scheduled international passenger-kilometres flown, carrying over 20 million passengers a year.

It’s fleet is all wide bodied and very new, it ordered over 130 planes in 2007 alone.

Where do Emirates fly to in Australia?

The major international destination airports for UK departures are Sydney, Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane.

The fabulous thing about Emirates are the Departure Airports. In the UK choose from Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham and London, so great news wherever you live saving time and money without compromising the quality of the carrier. For this reason we would always check Emirates.

How good are Emirates?

Oh they’re good. They came 5th in the Skytrax World Airline of the year awards 2009 ( having been in the top 10 since 2005 ) as well as winning the Best In-flight Entertainment Award. So they look after you and you won’t get bored, sounds like an excellent combination.

Economy is excellent with good legroom and catering. If your funds stretch then First Class passengers on Australian Flights have a full suite, complete with closing doors to ensure privacy, a mini-bar, a coat rack and a 23 in (58 cm) LCD screen. Business Class is also market leading with all of the facilities you’d expect.

Emirates don’t often play hard on price but they do have regular offers including upgrades and peripheral deals. They’re also a good choice for a stopover in Dubai.

What else should I know about Emirates?

Who are British Airways?

British Airways (BA) are now termed as the ‘flag carrier’ airline of the UK, whatever that means? They’re the world’s favourite airline’ and deep down we all secretly quite like BA.

Last year they carried 33,161,000 passengers all over the world on their 235 planes, landing at over 300 destinations on every inhabited continent.

When flying to Australia you will depart Heathrow Terminal Five once Europe’s largest building site and now a fully functioning masterpiece of baggage efficiency!

Where do BA fly to in Australia?

The major international destination airports for Heathrow departures are Sydney, Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide.

The BA website is helpful when booking flights to the smaller Oz destinations and the inclusive prices are also worth a look.

How good are BA?

British Airways are undeniably good in a very, very British way. If you’re a Brit BA offer you the opportunity to feel like you’re home as soon as you get on the plane… a far flung corner of an economy cabin that is forever Britain!

BA are known for sardine tactics in the economy cabin holding as they do the dubious accolade of being the first airline to squeeze ten abreast on a commercial jet ( that was designed to have 9 abreast ).

Club World is British excellence as is First Class with full length flat beds and ubiquitous service. If you can afford the extra expense Business and First Class really do give you a day back on this sort of long haul journey, there’s nothing like arriving fresh!

We’ve never found BA at the top for price anywhere, but that’s not what they’re about is it?

What else should I know about British Airways?

BA plan to be the first airline to fly non stop to Perth Australia in 2010 when their newest Airbus comes online.

In 1997 then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher showed her displeasure at the new BA designs by covering one of the new tailfins on a model plane with a handkerchief. She declared, “We fly the British flag, not these awful things.”

Concorde, the world’s most beautiful plane now sits proudly beside the runway at London Heathrow with the ‘proper’ BA livery intact – look out for it on take off and landing.

Virgin Atlantic's major Australian destination airports for London departures are Sydney, Perth and Melbourne. They also operate Virgin Blue offering a wide range of internal flights so they are always worth a look if you're considering traveling around Oz on your trip.

Who are Virgin Atlantic?

Who hasn’t heard of Richard Branson’s ever expanding commercial airline? Bold, brash and really up for it Virgin are the airline who openly want to be better than the rest.

Virgin Atlantic came in to being to challenge what it’s founders saw as a lazy, complacent industry. Whether it was and whether they did we don’t know but if you have to sit on a plane for 24 hours they are worth a look.

Where do Virgin fly to in Australia?

The major international destination airports for London departures are Sydney, Perth and Melbourne.

Eastern stopovers from the UK are plentiful and well worth the effort if you’ve got the time.

Virgin also operate Virgin Blue offering a wide range of internal flights so they are always worth a look if you’re considering traveling around Oz on your trip.

How good are Virgin?

Virgin won the best Premium Economy service in the world by research consultancy firm Skytrax confirming it’s aim of bringing higher quality air travel to the mas market.

Virgin Atlantic is one of our favourite airlines, the service culture just oozes out of everything they do. Staff are amongst the most helpful in the sky coming a close second to some of the Far Eastern airlines.

If you’re prepared to spend a bit more Virgin will do their best to give you a good return on your money. They’ve changed the game a little bit by moving business a bit closer to the Economy traveller in the form Premium Economy and First Class to the very top of the tree with Upper Class. In our experience those who pay the extra are seldom unhappy with their choice.

Their prices are pretty competitive both direct and via travel agents but don’t expect to see them appear too often in the bucket shops – they don’t really play that game.

What else should I know about Virgin?

Whilst Richard Branson is the figurehead of the airline 49% is owned by Singapore Airlines another company who are embedded in the culture of excellent customer service.

Virgin Galactic has 30 employees and is based in New Mexico. Far from being another mad cap scheme it could see long haul journey times slashed and significantly reduce fuel consumption and pollution.

Who are Qantas?

Qantas is the national airline of Australia and is the largest Oz based flight provider.

Nicknamed “The Flying Kangaroo”, the airline is based in Sydney, with its main hub at Sydney Airport. It is the world’s second oldest continuously operating airline starting shortly after Dutch national airline KLM. Qantas is headquartered in the Qantas Centre in the Mascot suburb of the City of Botany Bay, Sydney, New South Wales.

Where do Qantas fly to in Australia?

It’s fair to say that if there a is a stretch of tarmac long enough to land a plane anywhere in Oz there will almost certainly be a Qantas flight inbound or outbound.

The major international destination airports for UK departures are Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane.

Eastern stopovers from London are plentiful and well worth the effort if you’ve got the time.

Along with Virgin Blue they offer a wide range of internal flights so are always worth a look if you’re considering traveling around on your trip.

How good are Qantas?

In 2009, Qantas was voted the sixth best airline in the world by research consultancy firm Skytrax, dropping from third in 2008 and after managing second place in both 2005 & 2006.

We’ve had the pleasure of flying to Oz a number of times with Qantas in both Economy and Business and we have no complaints at all. The service is very good and in flight entertainment is class leading. They are one of those airlines who make your holiday start when you get on the plane, not when you get off it!

Business Class is excellent with full length flat beds and superb services. If you can afford the extra expense Business and First Class really do give you a day back on this sort of long haul journey, there’s nothing like arriving fresh!

Their prices are pretty competitive both direct and via travel agents.

What else should I know about Qantas?

The name was originally an acronym for “Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services”.

Quantas is one of the most misspelled searches on Google totaling about four and a half million a year! It is so prevalent that Qantas bought the web address so that they didn’t miss put on the business.

The urban myth about Qantas never having crashed was cemented by the great Dustin Hoffman in the film Rainman, in fact Qantas have had a few scrapes although it is true that outside of World War Two they have suffered no fatalities.
